The Gearhead’s Guide to Picking Hot Rod Apparel (and the Perfect Gift for Motorheads)

Welcome
Thanks for stopping by. If you want to get ahold of me for any pinstriping work or to ask about our clothing line just call me at 602-397-7134 or shoot an email to tony@astripe.com. I’m usually in the shop or out on a mobile job around Phoenix but I always get back to people. If you’re looking for custom car t shirts or just need to know how to spot the good stuff from the junk, you’re in the right place.

I’ve been doing this for over 35 years now. I’ve painted lines on everything from high-end hot rods to daily drivers and even the occasional golf cart. When I started my automotive lifestyle brand, I wanted the clothes to feel just as authentic as the paint I put on a fender. There is a lot of generic "car guy" clothing out there but if you want something that actually represents the culture you gotta look for the roots.

What Makes Good Hot Rod Apparel?

When you are looking for hot rod apparel, you don’t want something that’s going to fall apart after two washes. I’ve seen shirts where the design peels off like a bad sticker. That’s not what we do here. A real garage lifestyle clothing piece should be able to take a bit of grease and a lot of sun.

First off you gotta look at the art. A lot of big brands just use clip-art flames or generic fonts. My designs are rooted in actual hand-painted pinstriping. I take the same brushes I use on a hot rod and I use those designs for the shirts. It’s about that fine, decorative line work that you just can't get from a computer program. When you wear a shirt from a real artist, people in the community know the difference.

Secondly you should check the fabric. I prefer a mid-weight cotton that breathes well. If you are out at a car show in the Phoenix heat, you don’t want to be wearing a heavy plastic-feeling print. We use high-quality screen printing so the ink actually sits in the fabric, not just on top of it. It stays soft and it lasts.

Choosing Your Custom Car T Shirts

I have a few favorites in the shop that really show off what I mean. If you like that classic 50s vibe, you can’t go wrong with something like the Cadi Daddy.

This design is all about that vintage Cadillac style. It’s got the bold lines and the symmetry that makes a pinstripe job look "right." It’s a great example of how an automotive lifestyle brand should look, it’s not just a car on a shirt, it’s the art of the car.

Another one people really dig is the Who’s Your Daddy shirt. It’s got that retro pinstripe look that reminds you of the old school shops.

When you are picking out a shirt for yourself, think about where you’re going to wear it. If you’re wrenching in the garage, go for the darker colors like black or navy. They hide the dirt better and they look better as they age. If you’re headed to a show like Goodguys or a local cruise night, that’s when you can bust out the bolder designs.

How to Buy the Perfect Gift for a Gearhead

Buying a gift for a car person can be a real pain if you don't know exactly what parts they need for their build. Trust me, don't try to guess what carburetor or spark plugs they want. You'll probably get it wrong and they'll have to return it.

The safer and better bet is always high-quality hot rod apparel. Here is my quick guide on how to pick the right gift:

  1. Look at what they drive. If they have a lowered truck, they'll love something like the Taildragger Retro Pinstripe T-Shirt. It fits that specific "leadsled" or custom truck culture perfectly.
  2. Check the details. Real motorheads appreciate the craft. If you tell them, "Hey, this design was actually hand-painted by a pinstriper with 35 years of experience," they are going to value that shirt way more than some random thing from a department store.
  3. Go for a Bundle. If you want to make it a bigger gift, grab a couple of different designs and maybe a hat. It gives them a "uniform" for the weekend.
  4. Think about the lifestyle. Car guys aren't just about the car. They like the garage vibe. Garage lifestyle clothing is about feeling part of the club even when you aren't behind the wheel.

If you are still stuck just give me a call at 602-397-7134 and I can help you pick something out based on what your friend or husband or wife drives. I talk to car people all day long and I usually know what’s going to be a hit.

Why Authenticity Matters

The reason I’m so picky about how these shirts look is because pinstriping is a dying art in some ways. There aren't many of us left who do it all by hand without tape or stencils. When I put my name on a piece of clothing, it’s representing that tradition. Every line has a purpose and every design has a history.

Whether I am out doing a mobile pinstriping job on a motorcycle or I’m shipping a t-shirt out to someone across the country, I want it to be perfect. That’s just how I was taught to work. It’s that old-school craftsmanship that you just don't see as much anymore.
