Pinstriping Secrets Revealed: What 35 Years Behind the Brush in Phoenix Taught Me
Welcome
Hey there. If you’re looking for someone to touch up your ride or you just love the custom car culture here in the Phoenix Metro area, you’ve come to the right place. My name is Tony Perez and I’ve been holding a pinstriping brush since I was a kid. If you need to reach me right away to talk about your car, motorcycle,or even a golf cart, you can call or text me at (602) 397-7134 or shoot an email over to Tony@astripe.com. I’m usually around the area of 75th Ave. and Union Hills in Phoenix,Arizona, but I do offer mobile service in some cases if you can't bring the project to me.
I’ve spent over 35 years figuring out how to make paint lay just right on a piece of sheet metal. It isn't just about drawing lines; it's about knowing how the paint flows and how the brush feels in your hand when the Phoenix heat is trying to dry everything up before you're even done. I want to share a bit of what I've learned being "behind the brush" all these years and show you some of the gear I’ve put together for the shop.
The Early Days and the Lessons Learned
I basically grew up in a custom paint and fabrication shop. My dad, Leo Perez, was the one who started it all. He taught me how to fabricate, how to paint, and most importantly, how to pinstripe. By the time I was 14, I already had people paying me to work on their street rods and lowriders. It was a hell of a way to grow up,surrounded by the smell of reducer and the sound of sanders.

One of the big secrets I learned early on is that you can’t rush the art. Pinstriping is about precision. You’re talking about lines that are 1/16 to 1/4 inch wide, and they have to be symmetrical. If your hand shakes or your mind wanders, the line is ruined. After my time in the Marine Corps: where I got to paint murals and signs all over the world in places like Okinawa and Korea: I came back to Phoenix in 1987 and started "Tonys Pinstriping" for real. Since then,I’ve been lucky enough to work with legends like Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and Von Dutch. Working with guys like that teaches you that the "secrets" aren't really secrets at all; it’s just hard work and having a real eye for aesthetics.
The Secrets of the Phoenix Heat
People always ask me, "Tony, how do you get those lines so straight?" Part of it is the brush: I use high-quality pinstriping brushes like the Norris Trickster that hold just the right amount of paint: and part of it is the paint itself. I only use the best materials because I want my work to last as long as the car does. In the Phoenix Metro area, the sun is brutal. If you use cheap stuff, it’s going to fade or peel in no time.
Another secret is the consultation. I don't just start painting. I sit down with you and we talk about the design, the color, and the placement. Whether it's scroll pinstriping, old school lines, or even some gold leaf or lettering, it has to match the personality of the ride. You can see a lot of my past work on my portfolio page to get an idea of the different styles we can do.

Bringing the Art to the Apparel
A few years back, I decided I wanted to take the same designs I was putting on hot rods and motorcycles and put them on something you could wear. I’m a gearhead at heart, and I know most of my customers are too. We live in our garages,we go to the car shows, and we want to look the part. That’s why I started the clothing line at astripe.com.
I wanted the shirts to feel as authentic as the paint on a '32 Ford. One of our most popular items is the "Who's Your Daddy" Pinstripe T-Shirt. It’s got that classic, retro vibe that screams old-school cool. It isn't some generic design; it's based on the same hand-painted patterns I’ve perfected over 35 years.

You can grab the Who’s Your Daddy Tee here and see for yourself. We also have the "Cadi Daddy" shirt for the guys who love those long, sleek classic lines. I put a lot of pride into these shirts, just like I do with my pinstriping. When you wear one, you’re supporting a local Phoenix artist who’s been in the game since the 80s.
Why Hand-Painted Still Matters
In a world where everything is a vinyl sticker or a digital print,hand-painted pinstriping stands out. It has soul. You can feel the slight ridge of the paint when you run your finger over it. It’s unique: no two designs are ever exactly the same because they are done by hand, not a machine.
I do everything from new cars and daily drivers to full-blown show cars and motorcycles. I’ve even done golf carts and musical instruments. If it has a surface that paint will stick to,I can probably stripe it. My motto is "Professional Results In Daily Efforts": PRIDE. I take pride in every single line I lay down.
