WelcomeThanks for stopping by my blog. If you need to reach me about a pinstriping…
Authentic Lowrider Apparel and Hot Rod T-Shirts are the Soul of the Garage Lifestyle
Welcome
I have been doing this for over 35 years now. I started pinstriping back in 1987, but really, I grew up in it. My dad, Leo Perez, had a custom paint and fabrication shop Central Paints, and that is where I learned how to handle a brush and how to make a car look like something special. To me, authentic lowrider apparel and hot rod t shirts aren’t just something you throw on because you need a shirt. They are the soul of the garage lifestyle. When you wear a shirt that has a hand-painted design on it, or a design that came from a real pinstriper, you are carrying a piece of that history with you.
In this blog, I want to talk about why these styles matter so much to our community here in Phoenix and how it all ties back to the art of pinstriping. Whether you are into lowriders, hot rods, or just cool automotive art, this is for you.
Why Lowrider Apparel is About More Than Just Clothes
When we talk about lowrider apparel, we are talking about identity. I have spent a lot of time in the custom car scene, and I have seen how a club jacket or a specific t-shirt can tell a whole story before a person even says a word. In the Chicano community and the broader lowrider scene, these clothes are a way to show pride in where you come from and what you build.
Lowriding is an art form. It is about taking something and making it better, lower, and more beautiful. The clothing follows that same rule. When you see a shirt with intricate script or a design that mirrors the lines on a car’s fender, that is a connection to the craft. I try to bring that same level of detail to everything I do at Tony’s Pinstriping.
I have pinstriped everything from show cars to daily drivers, and I have learned that people want their gear to match the quality of their ride. That is why I started my own clothing line. I wanted to offer shirts that felt like they belonged in a garage, not a big box store.

Hot Rod T Shirts and the Need for Speed
Now, if you are on the hot rod side of things, the vibe is a little different but the soul is the same. Hot rod t shirts are about speed, power, and a bit of that rebellious spirit that started the whole scene back in the day. We are talking about flames, skulls, and big engines.
I remember working with guys like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Kenneth Howard, who everyone knows as “Von Dutch.” Those guys were legends for a reason. They understood that the art on the shirt is just as important as the art on the hood. I actually got to collaborate with them on some charity auctions, and that experience really shaped how I think about my designs today.
When I design a hot rod tee, I’m thinking about the lines of a ’32 Ford or the way a set of flames looks when they’re moving fast. It’s about that “gearhead” identity. People in the Phoenix Metro Area know that we have a huge culture for this, and wearing the right shirt is how you find your people at the Saturday night cruise or the local car show.
The Connection to Hand-Painted Pinstriping
A lot of people ask me why I still do everything by hand after 35 years. The truth is, you can just tell the difference. When I am pinstriping a motorcycle or a golf cart, I am using a brush to lay down fine lines, usually between 1/16 to 1/4 inch wide. It takes a steady hand and a lot of patience.
That same “hand-painted” feel is what makes authentic garage lifestyle clothing stand out. Mass-produced stuff just doesn’t have the same heart. My Taildragger Retro T-Shirt or the Cadi Daddy T-Shirt are designed to look like they came straight off my pinstriping table. They have those symmetrical, intricate patterns that I’ve spent my life perfecting.

If you want your vehicle or even your wardrobe to stand out, I can help you with that. I offer a consultative approach where we sit down and talk about the design, the colors, and the placement. I want to make sure it matches your vision. You can find me near 75th Ave. and Union Hills, or I can even come to you since I offer mobile service in some cases.
Living the Garage Lifestyle in Phoenix
Living in Arizona, we are lucky. We have the weather for cruising almost all year round. Whether it’s hitting the Glendale Avenue cruise or a show downtown, the garage lifestyle is alive and well here. For me, the “garage lifestyle” means spending your weekends under a hood, sharing tips with friends, and always looking for the next way to customize your ride.
I have seen the scene change over the years, but the core of it stays the same. It’s about pride. “Professional Results In Daily Efforts”, PRIDE. That really sums up what I try to do. Whether I am airbrushing a mural or just selling you a shirt, I want you to feel that pride.
I’ve had my work featured in magazines like Street Rodder and Street Chopper, and I’ve even been on the Discovery Channel pinstriping bikes for guys like Jesse Rooke. But at the end of the day, I’m just a guy in a shop in Phoenix who loves cars and art.

What I Can Do For You
If you are looking for that authentic touch, here is what I offer:
- Hand-Painted Pinstriping: For cars, motorcycles, trucks, golf carts, and anything else that stays still long enough.
- Custom Lettering and Airbrushing: To give your ride a name or a unique look.
- Gold Leaf and Southwest Art: I do a lot of work that reflects our beautiful Arizona surroundings.
- Automotive Apparel: My own line of shirts that are built for car enthusiasts.
I use only the highest quality paints and materials because I want the work to last as long as the car does. My pricing is always fair, I believe in a fair price for a quality job. I want you to be happy with the results and I want to be proud of the work.
More Than Just a Brand
Tony’s Pinstriping isn’t just a business for me, it’s my life’s work. From my time in the Marine Corps where I used my art skills to paint murals and signage at Camp Pendleton and overseas, to coming back home to Phoenix to start my own shop in 1987, it’s all been about the art.
When you buy a piece of lowrider apparel or one of my hot rod t shirts, you’re supporting a local artist who actually cares about the culture. You aren’t just a customer; you’re part of the community. I love seeing my shirts at car shows or seeing a truck I pinstriped years ago still looking sharp on the road.
